Abdi is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Civil and Structural Engineering (B.S.E , M.S.E 1984). He began his construction career in the United States with Brewran Development Corporation, as construction supervisor of single family homes and strip shopping centers. He progressed to Hartz Mountain Industries as a civil engineer for construction of commercial properties. He then moved on to create his own land acquisition and residential housing companies including North American Development, and Hampshire Land Company, a property management and development firm. Before joining Carlyle Development Group (CDG), he was a director and founder of Emanuel Land Company, a subsidiary of Emanuel & Company, a Wall Street investment banking firm. His responsibilities were to assess the engineering and financial feasibility of investment grade development projects, and syndication of real estate partnerships. His responsibilities for CDG include the evaluation and supervision of all investment activities and management personnel.
